{joel salatin events- one month away!}

I looked at the calendar this morning and realized two things- 1) I haven’t blogged in nearly two months (eeek!!) and 2) Joel Salatin is coming to our farm in exactly one month!!!

I won’t be chatting about the first realization (yet) but I did want to mention a couple things regarding the second point.

We have been making lists, working hard, marketing like mad, and throwing in a little stress for good measure these days in preparation for the Intensive Discovery Seminar and the Field Day.  Some of our friends over at Greenbelt Land Trust (who are also having a Joel event on the 21st) and our pals at ReDirect Guide have been working hard spreading the news as well.

I wanted to share about why we are hosting this event at our farm.

Our main goal at Afton Field Farm is to build, enhance, promote, educate, and further community.  We are doing as much as we can handle physically & emotionally to continue working toward and furthering that goal.

This is one reason why we want to provide an opportunity for the farming & food community to come learn, be inspired, and be better than when they first arrived by not only hearing Joel Salatin speak, but to by being at a young, growing farm.

There are new things to see that weren’t here last time- cattle & sheep grazing, 1600 square foot brooder, and a fully finished ODA licensed poultry processing facility, just to mention a few.  You will walk away from the day being inspired & encouraged, as well as many other knowledgeable ‘tools’ to add to your life or farm.  You’ll also learn a lot of what it actually means and looks like to be a young, growing farm business- with all it’s ups, downs, beauties, and areas of improvement.

We are proud to provide such a learning opportunity to our community of friends, farmers, foodies, and family.

Along with sharing our farm, information, and inspiration, we also are able to put the event proceeds toward paying off our land.  Aside from the costs of bringing Joel to the farm (speaking fees, plane tickets, marketing, merchandise, sponsorship ‘thank you’ packages…) we save the money to pay for our land.

We weren’t given the land, nor did we inherent it.  We are working very hard to be debt free with the full purchase of the acreage.

We believe that this place, Afton Field Farm, is not just ours, but our community’s.  We want this to be as much yours as it is ours.  Yours to enjoy, to explore, to learn, to glean, to be refreshed, to be awestruck, to labor in love, and yours to watch grow, change, and be made better.  Because of this, we add more farm hours, provide more opportunities to come experience the farm, and we take the extra earnings from events like the ones in August, to pay off this ‘community land’.  Your presence and financial contribution through coming to the events, is your part in making Afton Field Farm more of a success- while we are helping to make you a success.  Great how that works and keeps the circle of success going, isn’t it? :)

Thank you, everyone, for your continued support, involvement, encouragement, and patience over the years.  We look forward to seeing you in the future- at these events or others.

    Alicia! I LOVE this, all of this — the site, your life, what you guys are doing, you standing with JOEL. How fun! I vaguely knew you guys had the farm, but didn’t realize all THIS. Wow, how amazing. Jeff & I are committed to eating local, farm-fresh food whenever possible, and I found your farm while trying to locate grass-fed beef. It’s just so wonderful to see your face and I”m sending a hug through the computer. :) Wish we were in Corvallis so we could buy all your good stuff! You are so cute in your farm-shirt. Love, Kari

      Hi Kari!!! It is so good to hear from you! I love that you love what we are doing :) It is always nice to hear. I wish you lived in Corvallis, for many reasons, but you can still enjoy our products up in Portland. We have Buying Club deliveries every month! You ordered last month, but if you want more info email us (mail{at}aftonfieldfarm{dot}com) and we can share all the great opportunities with you. Take care and hope to see you around more often :)
